Aromatics Oman — the $1.1 billion-world-class green field petrochemical complex planned in Sohar Industrial Area — is expected to sign an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract and financial closure agreement by next month.

“We are planning to sign an EPC contract and term lending agreement with lending institutions by December this year. Construction work is scheduled to start by January next year”, said Dr Mohammed Benayoune, Chief Executive Officer of Aromatics Oman.

Dr Benayoune said the company would produce over 1 million tonnes of paraxylene and benzene using products from Sohar Refinery. Paraxylene is used predominantly in producing polyester, while benzene is used in a wide variety of products ranging from plastics to pharmaceuticals. "Initially, we will export the company's entire production. But subsequently a portion will be sold in the domestic market as a number of downstream industries are expected to come up in the country", he said.

The company's 60 per cent stake is held by Oman Oil Company (OOC), 20 per cent by Oman Refinery Company (ORC) and 20 per cent by LG International. Both OOC and ORC are wholly owned by the Oman government.
