Alstom was awarded a contract worth about €50 million1 by China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) to provide electro-mechanical equipment and technical services for Zungeru Hydropower Project, Nigeria’s largest hydropower plant under construction.

According to the contract, Alstom will provide four 175 MW Francis turbine-generator sets and related equipment for this project. Alstom Hydro China (AHC) is responsible for the equipment design, manufacturing, supervision to the installation, commissioning, testing as well as site services.

Located on the middle and upper reaches of River Kaduna near Zungeru in Nigeria, Zungeru Hydropower Project will become the country’s largest hydropower project once operated, with 700MW installed capacity in total. Apart from providing a large amount of power, the project will also benefit local flood protection, irrigation and shipping etc., greatly contributing to the area’s social and economic growth.

“Zungeru is one of several hydro projects that are part of Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan. We are honored to participate in such a grand agenda. Winning this project is another fruitful result from a strong and long-term cooperation with our Chinese partners. It further consolidates Alstom's leading position in Africa’s hydropower market and paves the way to further successes. Finally, we are proud to contribute to the economic growth in this region”, said Yves Rannou, Hydro Senior Vice President of Alstom Renewable Energies.

Alstom is the world leading supplier of hydro power generation equipment and systems, with more than 25% of the global hydropower installed capacity. Leading the way in hydro innovation, Alstom technology is central to many record-breaking hydropower plants in the world, including the world’s five highest capacity hydro installations in operation.

Alstom Hydro China (AHC) is Alstom’s largest hydropower industrial site worldwide. Over the past twenty years, it has accumulated a 20% market share of the total Chinese installed capacity of large hydro equipment. Apart from China, AHC plays a significant role in the Asian and African hydropower market with a great number of export projects. AHC is also delivering critical equipment to Europe, North America and Latin America.
