Sakhalin Energy and the Sakhalin branch of the Federal Research Centre “Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Science” have signed an agreement on cooperation. Its purpose is to provide for mutual exchange of information on all registered seismic events on Sakhalin Island.

The agreement lays the basis for cooperation between the parties in improving the quality of information on the characteristics of observed earthquakes, including more exact determination of their magnitude and epicentre coordinates.

The route of the Sakhalin-2 onshore pipeline traverses almost the full length of the Island and crosses 19 active tectonic faults. Sakhalin Energy must closely monitor and analyse all seismic events on the Island in order to be able to react quickly if an earthquake occurs.

The company has its own seismic monitoring system with 13 stations situated along the entire right-of-way of the trans-Sakhalin pipeline, from Chaivo bay in the north to the port of Prigorodnoye in the south. Cooperation with the Sakhalin branch of the Federal Research Centre will make it possible to obtain more accurate and quick assessments of the earthquake’s characteristics and consequences.

At the signing ceremony, the Onshore Pipeline Operations Manager Evgeny Mikhalyov said: “We hope that this agreement will make it possible to improve the accuracy of operational evaluation of the parameters and consequences of seismic events on the Island and the coastal zone of the Sea of Okhotsk.” He also added that this agreement would make it possible to take timely and balanced decisions on the need for and scope of emergency actions to ensure people safety and to minimise the earthquake’s impact on buildings/structures and the environment.

According to Director of the Sakhalin branch of the Federal Research Centre “Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Science” Yuri Levin, by integrating the additional information from Sakhalin Energy’s seismic stations with their own sources, it will become possible to carry out comprehensive seismic studies on the Island and its shelf zone.

The Sakhalin branch of the Federal Research Centre “Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Science” has been involved in instrumental seismic observations on Sakhalin for 70 years. At present it carries out seismologic observations based on stationary and mobile networks, the analysis and processing of seismologic data, including prompt warnings to the central and local government authorities and other interested parties on the parameters and potential consequences of earthquakes in the Far-East region.

In addition, the Centre’s competence also includes the estimation of seismicity in Sakhalin Oblast; seismic monitoring of underwater earthquakes in the Pacific Ocean and marginal Far-Eastern seas for the Tsunamy Warning Service in the Far East region of the Russian Federation.
