With the purchase of 12 hectares of industrial land in Dilsen-Stokkem, GIGA Storage has acquired a suitable site for the Green Turtle battery park. For the purchase, GIGA Storage Belgium could count on financial support from Belfius and the Flemish investment company PMV. This plot is located on the Rotem industrial estate a battery park with a storage capacity of 600 MW; the equivalent of the energy that 330.000 families consume on average.
PLOT ON THE ROTEM INDUSTRIAL SITE
The Green Turtle battery park will be built on a plot of the former zinc factory on the Rotem industrial estate in Dilsen-Stokkem. This concerns a piece of land of approximately 12 hectares located next to Elia's future high-voltage station. Joeri Siborgs, General Manager of GIGA Storage Belgium: “The purchase of the plot is an important milestone for GIGA Storage Belgium because it makes tangible the start of our energy initiative in Belgium. With the permit and the site in our possession, we can now shift our focus to the start of construction.”
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM PMV AND BELFIUS
For the purchase of the plot, GIGA Storage Belgium could count on the financial support of Belfius and the Flemish Investment Company PMV. “Actively committed to greater energy efficiency and renewable energy is close to our hearts at Belfius. This investment is therefore completely in line with this ambition. We are proud to be taking the first steps towards the largest battery park in Europe,” said Dirk Gyselinck, Executive Director Wealth, Enterprises & Public of Belfius. “With our loan to GIGA Storage Belgium, we want to help build the energy transition and the energy system of tomorrow, just as we have previously played a pioneering role in the development of wind farms in our region with our expertise and financing.", says Tom Mortier, head of Energy PMV.
