Excavators and builders have started their work: Germany's largest solar thermal system is being built in Leipzig-Lausen. Leipziger Stadtwerke and its partner Ritter XL Solar rely on state-of-the-art technology and particularly natural management of the area. “Leipzig and its municipal utilities are making progress in establishing a climate-neutral heat supply,” says Wolfram Günther, Saxon State Minister for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture. "The new solar thermal energy Leipzig West shows how renewable energies and species protection can be combined. Leipzig is putting the energy transition on many different pillars - from projects with green hydrogen to wind energy and photovoltaics on municipal buildings to the solar thermal system that is now being built in the west of Leipzig. These are all important steps on the way to climate neutrality."

Security of supply and climate protection
Karsten Rogall, Managing Director of Leipziger Stadtwerke, emphasizes: "For us, sustainability means thinking about and promoting security of supply and climate protection together. The new system is further proof of this. We are thus increasing the proportion of renewable energy in our district heating system." In summer, the system supplies up to around 20 percent of Leipzig's heating needs every day; over the year it is an average of around 2 percent. “The system should be ready at the end of 2025 and will be feeding in heat from 2026,” adds his managing director colleague Dr. Maik Piehler. Leipziger Stadtwerke is investing around 40 million euros for this, of which around 16 million euros will be funded.

The Leipzig West solar thermal system is also something very special for Ritter XL Solar, the market leader for large-scale solar systems in Germany. "We have already implemented several large projects - from Potsdam to Mühlhausen to Greifswald. This is a new dimension. It will be the largest solar thermal system in Germany for years," says Matthias Johler, Managing Director of Ritter Energie, which owns the Ritter brand XL Solar belongs. In the westernmost district of Leipzig, the company relies on its most modern, intelligent system: an algorithm controls the system as efficiently as possible. “The technology measures the solar radiation in the collector field and accordingly controls the flow speed of the water that is heated in the collectors,” explains Ritter project engineer Paul Gaspar. "The less sun shines, the slower the water flows to warm up. The vacuum collector also works like a thermos flask - hot on the inside, cold on the outside."
