The Mauritanian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on Monday. The memorandum, signed by Mauritania's Minister of Oil, Mines, and Energy, Nani Ould Chrougha, and Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, focuses on electricity, energy, and clean hydrogen sectors.
Outlined in a statement by the Mauritanian Ministry of Energy, the MoU promotes the exchange of expertise and explores partnership opportunities in the renewable energy sector, including solar, wind, and geothermal energy. It also emphasizes the adoption of fossil fuel technologies, incorporating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies to enhance energy production and reliability.
During the meeting, both parties discussed investment prospects in Mauritania's energy sectors. The Saudi Energy Minister directed ACWA Power, a Saudi Arabian company specializing in water and energy projects, to collaborate with the Mauritanian ministry to explore a renewable energy-based electricity production project for water desalination.
Furthermore, the Saudi minister encouraged the company to begin studying the utilization of gas from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field for the local market, proposing the establishment of a pipeline for gas transportation from the distribution point to the N'Diago port area. Additionally, plans were laid out for the construction of a power plant to generate electricity from gas.
This memorandum signing highlights Mauritania's commitment to enhancing the development of its electricity system through the strengthening of its reliability and security.
