With the dronePORT Hamburg (Niedernfelder Ufer 2, 20457 Hamburg), Hamburg Aviation, the Hamburg Police and the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) jointly opened the first location for unmanned aviation and mobile sensor technology. This is the first ground infrastructure of its kind in Europe.

At the opening, Andreas Richter, Head of the Innovation and Cluster Department at the Authority for Economic Affairs and Innovation, Hamburg Police Chief Falk Schnabel and HPA Managing Director Jens Meier ceremoniously cut the red ribbon.

Falk Schnabel, Police Chief: "Drones will change and shape police work in the future. As low-emission and low-noise tools, they are already a valuable aid in the search for missing persons, traffic control and at major events. With the dronePORT, Hamburg is setting the innovative standard - also for the police."

Jens Meier, CEO, Hamburg Port Authority: “With the opening of the dronePORT, we have reached the next milestone. With the introduction of remote-controlled drone services beyond line of sight, the dronePORT is the first ground infrastructure of its kind in Europe.”

By using unmanned systems, dronePORT Hamburg offers new working methods for infrastructure and traffic management. This is made possible by flying drones, robot dogs and swimming and underwater drones. The advantages are manifold: HPA departments as well as civil protection and the police can use these technologies to collect the required data in a modern and cost-effective way. At the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced. Expensive police helicopter flights can, for example, be replaced by drone flights, which provide the same or better quality of information for police work. The HPA uses the systems for inspections of infrastructure objects such as bridges, roads and large areas or for situational awareness in the event of disasters in the port area.

As part of the dronePORT opening, HPA and police as well as other partners including HHLA Sky, LSBG, Beagle Systems, Flynex, ZAL, HAW and EmQopter presented their products and projects (e.g. CITYAM, BLU-Space).
