Altilium’s EV Battery Recycling Revolution in Numbers

Altilium Clean Technology planned scale-up of its operations over the next 36 months will result in total carbon savings of nearly 383,480 tonnes of carbon per year (based on a saving of 2.2kg CO2 per kg of battery recycled).

That’s the equivalent of the carbon saving of planting of nearly 19 million trees in 1 year, saving 2.3 billion kms driven in a diesel car or cancelling nearly 1 million flights from Amsterdam to Rome.

Our Tavistock pilot line is already recycling battery waste to produce low carbon cathode active materials (CAM), resulting in a saving of 20 tonnes of carbon per year.

The next stage in our growth will see the opening of a mini commercial plant later this year, saving a further 660 tonnes of carbon per year, followed by our East European recycling plant in 2025, saving 52,800 tonnes of carbon per year.

Altilium’s planned mega-scale battery recycling facility in Teesside, one of the largest such facilities in Europe, will save an estimated 330,000 tonnes of carbon per year, making a huge contribution towards the decarbonisation of transport in the UK.

Reducing emissions from battery production will be critical to maximising the positive environmental impact of EVs and achieving the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Currently batteries account for up to 60% of embedded greenhouse emissions in EV production, with mining and refining raw materials accounting for about a quarter of total battery production emissions.

By recovering and reusing the critical materials from end-of-life batteries, Altilium is building a secure and low carbon battery supply chain for the UK, reducing the environmental impact of battery production and making EVs even cleaner.
