Sunrock and Delta Development announce the launch of the innovative battery storage solution “Battery Energy Storage System” (BESS) in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia. It complements the photovoltaic system of the flagship property of project developer Delta Development and provides the tenant of the building with a continuous supply of fossil-free energy. The system thus contributes to the project’s sustainability strategy.

Düsseldorf, 18 June 2024 Sunrock, the leading European developer of photovoltaic systems for large rooftops, has put a battery energy storage system in collaboration with the supplier and Dutch provider of energy storage solution iwell into operation into operation on the roof of the “The Levi Strauss & Co. European Distribution Center” logistics property developed by Delta Development in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia. It has a capacity of 1,000 kWh and stores the energy generated by the solar modules that is not immediately consumed during operations. This enables the user to have an optimal and secure supply of fossil-free and locally generated energy.

Last year, Sunrock equipped the pilot project with a large-scale PV system with an output of 3.45 MWp. This saves the user over 1,300 tons of CO2 every year. This is roughly equivalent to the emissions of 908 single-person households. The solar power solution is part of the property’s comprehensive sustainability concept. As such, the cradle-to-cradle approach was applied for the first time in Germany and all building materials were precisely documented in a building passport. CO2 monitoring was already started during the construction phase and will continue throughout the entire operating period in order to offset all emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050 as planned. In this way, the project meets the climate protection targets.

The addition of battery storage solutions to photovoltaic systems is part of Sunrock’s strategy to expand its service portfolio with local integrated energy solutions, which will also be available in Germany in the future. These combine the battery storage solution for optimized use with an intelligent energy management system that calculates the most efficient and profitable energy flow in real time. The system can also be connected to charging stations for electric vehicles, enabling dynamic charging.

“‘The Levi Strauss & Co. European Distribution Center’ shows how logistics properties can be developed to the highest sustainability standards. Technological innovations are a cornerstone for this. The efficient storage of surplus solar power further increases the energy efficiency of the property and makes an important contribution to offsetting CO2 emissions for the property user. The owner also benefits from the solution through an optimized ESG ranking,” explains Edwin Meijerink, Managing Director of Delta Development.

Georg Brenninkmeijer, Managing Director Sunrock Germany, comments: “The launch of the Battery Energy Storage System is a good signal. It ensures a continuous supply of solar energy and supports the project’s sustainability strategy. We would like to thank Delta Development as well as iwell for their cooperation and look forward to playing an active role in shaping the path to a clean energy future.”
