A new phase of scientific research begins for Med Wind, the largest offshore floating wind farm project in the heart of the Mediterranean. Right on schedule, our engineers together with technicians from Seas Geosciences, took part in the kick-off meeting for the second phase of the geotechnical campaigns.
In the first phase, Seas Geosciences, keeping all those involved safe and in collaboration with the Italian company Argo, successfully carried out detailed geotechnical investigations. The purpose was to define the anchoring system of the turbines that will make up the wind farm, with the execution of about 200 static penetrometric tests, reaching depths of 40 metres from the seabed in the area where the wind farm will be built, which is characterised by depths of over 800 metres, and 5 metres along the export pipelines with sea depths of over 1000 metres.
Now the second phase, which is underway, involves sediment sampling, both in the area where the wind farm will be located and along the export routes of the electricity produced. Seas Geosciences is adopting innovative sampling procedures and methods with distinctive remote- controlled systems, guaranteeing a high standard of quality also during this phase. This investigation campaign will allow the acquisition of the information necessary for the geotechnical characterisation of the area with the aim of defining the best possible solutions for the anchoring of Med Wind’s turbines, completing the framework of the investigations already conducted previously, which have demonstrated the sustainability of the project. project. For this phase, in addition, the geotechnical machine will operate at sea depths ranging from 600 to 1,200 meters.
If wind is the founding element of our ‘green’ revolution, equally important are the people in the Renexia team who help to bring it about, ensuring expertise, dedication, motivation and much more underpins every operation. This valuable mix of ingredients has given great value to the synergy with Seas Geosciences and is a vital contribution to achieving our goals in terms of sustainability and best practices in offshore floating. For this reason, special thanks go to our Matteo Pierabella, Project Control Manager, Marco Giugliano, Project Engineer, Giancarlo Di Simone, Client Representative on board, (pictured) and the entire Renexia team, who are taking care of the many activities in the field with great professionalism, from design to operations at sea.
