Arup will oversee the project management, procurement and contract management of the hydrogen electrolysis facility to ensure it is delivered safely on time, within budget, to industry best standards and in compliance with all statutory requirements.

Ireland’s semi-state climate solutions company, Bord na Móna, has appointed Arup as Owners Engineer for a new 2MW pilot scale hydrogen electrolysis plant to be developed at its wind farm in Mountlucas, County Offaly.

This innovative project aims to produce green hydrogen by harnessing power generated from the existing Mountlucas Wind Farm in Ireland’s midlands. Once operational, the new plant will use this renewable energy source to split water to generate over 200,000kg of green hydrogen a year. Aligned with Ireland’s National Hydrogen Strategy, the plant will be crucial to the country’s energy transition and enhancing energy security.

As Owners Engineer, Arup’s team of project managers, engineers, procurement and cost management specialists and health and safety advisors will oversee the project management, procurement and contract management of the hydrogen electrolysis facility to ensure it is delivered safely on time, within budget, to industry best standards and in compliance with all statutory requirements. Arup will also undertake the role of Project Supervisor for the Design Stage (PSDP).

The green energy produced at the Mountlucas site will help to decarbonise elements of Ireland’s energy consuming sectors, including transportation, and the plant will produce enough green hydrogen to replace the equivalent of over half a million litres of diesel.
