Representatives from maritime and inland shipping, the maritime industry and science, energy suppliers, industry and environmental associations, the finance sector as well as public administration on both federal and state levels jointly discuss measures for national maritime and inland shipping with a view to climate protection.

Accompanying SMM 2024, the world’s leading maritime trade fair, the second in-person workshop for the development of the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping (NAPS) took place on 5 September in Hamburg. In accordance with the following NAPS fields of action on the climate-friendly transformation of maritime and inland shipping, important stakeholder impetus for the development of a programme of measures for Germany as a shipping location will be introduced and discussed as part of the process of strategy development:

Alternative drive and energy systems
Supply with climate-friendly energy sources
Fleet modernisation
Maritime industrial policy
Green shipping corridors

The programme of measures to be developed on this basis is to become an integral component of NAPS as a learning strategy of the federal government. The National Action Plan was launched in May 2024 as an initiative of the federal government via the BMDV and the BMWK. The objective is to develop a strategic roadmap for Germany as a shipping location that will facilitate achieving the climate protection targets for maritime and inland shipping on national, European and international levels. Representatives from the industry as well as public administration on federal and state levels are closely involved in its development.

The strategy development process for the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping is coordinated by the BMDV and the BMWK, with NOW GmbH providing organizational and advisory support.
