EIG, a leading institutional investor in the global energy and infrastructure sectors, has launched Fidra Energy, a European battery and energy storage (BESS) platform headquartered in Edinburgh, UK.
Fidra Energy is developing three of the largest battery energy storage sites in the UK and intends to develop a 10GW platform in the UK and other European markets by 2030.
The biggest of the three projects, Thorpe Marsh, South Yorkshire, is a 1.45GW site which is the largest battery storage project in Europe and one of the largest in the world. It is ten times larger than the biggest operational BESS project in the UK and is expected to begin construction in 2025. Once completed, the site will be able to power up to 800,000 homes.
The two other proposals Fidra Energy is bringing forward include Bicker Fen 1&2, East Midlands, a 1.2GW site, and West Burton C, Nottinghamshire, a 500MW site. Together, once built, these three projects will provide enough electricity to meet over five percent of the UK’s peak demand.
Backed by EIG, the Fidra Energy team has a proven track record in developing, constructing and operating flexible generation and storage assets.
Chris Elder, Chief Executive Officer, Fidra Energy, said: “Fidra Energy will deliver big batteries to major markets.
“As a proven low-cost flexible technology, battery storage will play a critical role in the energy transition across Europe.
“Our strategy is focused on leveraging the Fidra team’s experience in developing, building and operating large power projects which benefit from economies of scale”
