• The Ministry of Climate Protection awarded model companies for their commitment
Matters of energy efficiency and climate protection.
• The INNIO Group was recognized for its CO2 savings, its battery storage and its third heat storage in Jenbach.
• The recognition confirms the Jenbacher path to greater energy efficiency.
The Austrian Ministry of Climate Protection honored the INNIO Group’s Jenbach location for its commitment to energy efficiency and climate protection as part of the fifth Austrian Energy Efficiency Congress. Specifically, the innovative provider of energy solutions was recognized for its CO2 savings as well as for two outstanding measures: for the construction of a battery storage facility and a third heat storage facility at the Jenbach location.
Both measures support the INNIO Group on its path to greater energy efficiency by making the electrical and thermal energy generated at the Jenbach location more usable. This meant that a total of 3,770,000 kWh could be saved in 2023 compared to 2022.
The battery storage, which has been fully operational since the beginning of 2023, allows the storage of the electrical energy that the engines produced in Jenbach produce as part of the test bench acceptance tests and subsequently the use of this energy as required in the factory. In this way, the INNIO Group avoids the loss of excess production during the day and the purchase of electricity at night when no test bench inspections are taking place and therefore no electricity is being generated.
In addition, the battery storage enables island operation and quick starting of the Jenbacher engines, as the battery is connected to the network within milliseconds after starting. This means that the INNIO Group can supply its Jenbach production site with energy self-sufficiently and highly efficiently even in the event of a power outage in the public grid.
In order to efficiently use the heat generated during the test bench acceptance tests for the engines, the INNIO Group put a third heat storage unit with 220 cubic meters into operation at the Jenbach location at the beginning of 2023. This also reduces natural gas consumption, as the heat in the factory would otherwise be generated using gas boilers.
“We are very proud and pleased about this new award from klimaaktiv. It’s always nice to see that our efforts to increase energy efficiency are also recognized from outside and can serve as role models,” says Martin Mühlbacher, site manager of the INNIO Group in Jenbach, on the occasion of the award.
As a klimaaktiv project partner since 2017, the INNIO Group is continually taking measures to reduce its CO2 emissions and improve its energy efficiency, for which it has already been awarded several times. In addition, the innovative company has set science-based emissions reduction targets in line with the 1.5°C scenario of the Paris Agreement.
