The C. Steinweg Group has placed an order for a comprehensive overhaul and modernization of one of its Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbor cranes at its headquarters in the Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port. This order, which is rare given the scope and thoroughness of the work, highlights Konecranes’ expertise in extending the service life of existing port equipment. By upgrading this essential piece of equipment, Steinweg can improve its logistics capabilities and maintain its competitive edge in the dynamic European market.

Originally brought into service in 2003, the crane will undergo significant upgrades, including the replacement and refurbishment of its main components – drives, electrics, engine and hydraulics. The modernization and refurbishment project is set to begin in Q2 2025.

“Having a history spanning 175 years, we understand that to ensure our continued success, we must maintain efficient and sustainable operations. As the original equipment manufacturer, Konecranes is uniquely positioned and certified to provide a modernization that meets our strict local standards and integrates with our existing fleet of Konecranes Gottwald cranes,” says Arie Stam, Technical Service Cranes Manager at Steinweg.

Wesley Claessens, Sales Manager for Port Services Benelux at Konecranes, adds, “Our cranes are designed to last for decades, but even high-quality components eventually wear out. This modernization will not only replace and refurbish outdated parts but also introduce new technology that improves safety and performance, and further extends the crane's life. We are proud to partner with Steinweg in this investment to enhance their operational efficiency.”

The modernization will preserve the crane’s original steel structure while adding new electric drives and components controlled by updated software, an optimized diesel generator compatible with biofuels, and upgraded hydraulics and electric motors. Additionally, the crane will be prepared for an external power supply, allowing for future retrofitting to electric operation, which will help reduce exhaust and noise emissions.

New onboard PLC (programmable logic controller) computers will operate the latest crane software for smoother and safer operations. Digital services like TRUCONNECT® Remote Monitoring will provide real-time performance data and support maintenance efforts. Upon completion, the crane will be equivalent to a new Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 Mobile Harbor Crane.

A strong focus on customers and commitment to business growth and continuous improvement make Konecranes a material handling industry leader. This is underpinned by investments in digitalization and technology, plus our work to make material flows more efficient with solutions that decarbonize the economy and advance circularity and safety.
