Key Technologies to Support the Maritime Clean Energy Transition Featured at the ABS Forum

Alternative fuels, vessel design optimization and energy efficiency improvements through electrification led the discussion at the second annual ABS Singapore Technology Forum.

Titled Leveraging Technology for Maritime Energy Transition, more than 150 industry leaders, including representatives from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Maritime Institute, attended.

“This forum underscores our dedication not only to maintain excellence in classification services but also to foster collaboration within industry, academia and government for new technology development. To help safely deliver the rapid technological advances our industry needs, collaboration will be essential. ABS is proud to leverage our global network of specialists and deep technical expertise to support the next generation of marine and offshore assets,” said Dr. Hai Gu, ABS Vice President, Technology.

Panelists from across the maritime value chain such as MPA, PaxOcean, Seatrium and ABB discussed challenges and opportunities in the electrification of the maritime industry.

External guest speakers from Rystad Energy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University covered key topics such as enhancing efficiencies in using ammonia as marine fuel and ongoing developments in the carbon value chain for the maritime industry.

Kenneth Lim, Assistant Chief Executive Industry & Transformation of MPA said: “MPA remains committed to collaborating with like-minded partners, including ABS, to support the maritime industry’s ongoing transformation. Technology will be an integral enabler, and events such as the ABS Technology Forum offer a platform to exchange views and showcase collaboration between researchers, innovators, and the shipping industry.”
