Bruce Power has signed a 10-year extension to a Master Service Agreement (MSA) with Kinectrics Inc. in support of continued excellence in its operation, Life-Extension Program and the production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes.

The strategic, long-term collaboration is estimated at $2.5 billion over the term of the agreement and supports engineering project management, project controls, outages, lifecycle asset management, reactor programs and tooling, equipment supply, nuclear safety and licensing as well as maintenance activities.

This agreement enables Kinectrics to support Bruce Power with solutions to support cost certainty, reduce outage duration and frequency, as well as provide holistic services to support its Life-Extension Program and the production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes.

“Bruce Power is pleased to continue its partnership with Kinectrics as we continue to power Ontario’s future with a reliable supply of clean electricity and the production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes for the world health-care community,” said James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President. “We share a commitment to excellence, localization and economic development as we deliver on our life-extension, Project 2030 and isotope programs.”

Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification, expressed support for the continued collaboration between Bruce Power and Kinectrics.

“Not only does nuclear power provide more than 50 per cent of the province’s electricity, it’s also producing life-saving medical isotopes that are being used to diagnose and treat cancers in Ontario and around the world,” said Minister Lecce. “As someone who has been impacted by cancer in my family like so many Canadians, I’m pleased to see Bruce Power and Kinectrics working together to ensure we can continue to save lives and further cement Ontario’s place as a global leader in the production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes.”

Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program is Ontario’s largest clean-energy initiative and one of Canada’s largest private-sector infrastructure projects, funded by private-sector investors. Bruce Power injects billions in direct and indirect economic activity in Canada from operations and its Life-Extension Program, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and stimulating economic development.

In response to the projected growth in Ontario’s electricity demand over the coming decades, Bruce Power is also in the early stages of exploring options for new nuclear capacity on site through the federal impact assessment (IA) process. The IA is a multi-year process involving Indigenous, municipal and public engagement, as well as environmental and socioeconomic studies.

“This extended agreement between Bruce Power and Kinectrics will have tremendous, long-lasting economic impacts not only locally in Bruce, Huron and Grey but also across the province and beyond,” said Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs and MPP for Huron-Bruce. “This partnership will not only support Bruce Power’s legacy of clean and affordable electricity, but together with Kinectrics, they are generating hope around the world as they pave the way forward with the production of cancer-fighting isotopes.”

“We’re pleased to continue our partnership with Kinectrics, which will help us to continue to produce clean and reliable energy for the people of Ontario for decades to come,” said David Furr, Bruce Power’s Vice-President, Supply Chain. “This long-term strategic agreement allows for capacity planning for our projects and is beneficial for cost management for both companies.”

“We’re humbled by the trust placed by Bruce Power in Kinectrics and are committed to providing high-quality, innovative solutions to strengthen Bruce Power’s life-extension journey for the next decade,” said David Harris, President and CEO, Kinectrics Inc. “This agreement enables Kinectrics to focus on the long term, investing in and developing new industry-leading services that will help Bruce Power remain a leader in delivering clean reliable power, along with cancer-fighting medical isotopes globally”.

Kinectrics has proudly been a premier service provider to Bruce Power and the global electricity industry for nearly 25 years. Currently, there are more than 300 staff in the Clean Energy Frontier region of Huron, Bruce and Grey Counties and this agreement will allow Kinectrics to invest more in the community, creating local job opportunities, supporting growth within the region and helping to transform the relationship with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON).

Backed by decades of experience, Kinectrics’ team of experts and specialized facilities have been critical to the development of innovative solutions that have helped drive the nuclear industry forward. It collaborated closely with Bruce Power and other industry partners to support the health industry by developing an Isotope Production System (IPS) that was installed into Unit 7 to commercially produce medical isotopes used to support the fight against cancer, helping to save lives around the world.

Kinectrics makes safety, quality and customer focus their top-priority, supporting its vision to sustainably power a clean energy future.
