Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) recently hosted its first roundtable with Great British Energy, at the University of Aberdeen, bringing together key industry stakeholders from across the public and private sectors to discuss the future of energy in the region.

The event, which took place on 9th of December, saw Great British Energy chair Juergen Maier and official, Hellen Hasson, share insights into GB Energy’s plans and its commitment to working with industry whilst establishing its headquarters in the North-east of Scotland.

Sarah Wells, AREG business development manager, said: “The roundtable provided a valuable opportunity to spark discussions about the future of the energy industry in the North-east. As the region navigates the energy transition, it’s vital that we continue to position Aberdeen at the forefront of renewable energy innovation on a global scale.”

Key topics covered at the roundtable included the role of technology and digital innovation in strengthening local and UK-wide supply chains with a focus on how GB Energy can contribute to these efforts. Emphasis was also placed on ensuring Aberdeen remains a central hub for offshore wind decision-making.

The importance of digital innovation to support industry growth and the role of technology in enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and streamlining operations was identified as key to growing the sector.

Jean Morrison, AREG chairperson added:

“We will continue to build on the momentum from our roundtable and work closely with Great British Energy to support AREG members and promote the growth of renewable energy across the North-east and wider supply chain.

“Collaboration is key to shaping the future of renewable energy in the region and we are committed to supporting North-east businesses to capitalise on the opportunities that exist as we transition to net zero.”

“With plans for our upcoming Scottish Energy Futures event with SPE Aberdeen well under way, we look forward to building on these conversations in 2025 and working together to achieve a just energy transition.”
