The Australian Government declared an area off of northern Tasmania’s Bass Strait as suitable for offshore wind development on 12 December 2024.
The zone will:
maximise use of local businesses, manufacturers and workers
create opportunities for local apprenticeships and reskilling
Provide potential to generate 20 GW of offshore wind energy – enough to power millions of homes
drive local economic benefit and opportunities for Tasmania
help us secure reliable and cheaper energy for households and businesses
help us reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The declaration follows consultation with:
local communities
state and local government representatives
First Nations people
existing industries including shipping, defence, fishing, and other marine users.
Bass Strait is the sixth area declared suitable for offshore wind development:
Gippsland, Victoria
Hunter, New South Wales
Sothern Ocean, Victoria
Illawarra, New South Wales
Indian Ocean off Bunbury, Western Australia.
