Arlindo Carlos headed the Angolan delegation at the 15th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held in Abu Dhabi on Monday and Tuesday.
As a permanent member of the multilateral organization, Angola participated and conveyed a message focused on ongoing actions for an effective energy transition.
The Secretary of State for Energy underlined the need for a just and balanced energy transition, ensuring that the country addresses the issue also as a pathway for economic growth, contributing to the development of technical capacities and, through this, reducing poverty.
Financing for countries was also a subject addressed by the Secretary of State, highlighting the heterogeneous matrix that configures the set of IRENA member countries.
The meeting took place under the theme “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” marking the first international energy meeting of the year, with the participation of more than 1,400 delegates from 170 countries, including energy experts and sector leaders.
The entities also discussed the contribution and importance of renewable energies in the energy matrices of member countries and globally.
Discussions centered on how to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, support transitions in emerging economies and how to leverage innovative financial flows in countries in need.
IRENA, with the support of the United Arab Emirates, has a defined plan to capitalize on 25 member states.
On the sidelines of the 15th IRENA Assembly, the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is taking place from 12 to 18 of this month with the participation of Heads of State, ministers, high-level delegates and experts, to accelerate sustainability efforts worldwide. The Angolan delegation will also participate in this international event.
Angola assumed, in the last 12 months, the vice-presidency of IRENA, representing the group of African countries, now passing the mandate to Namibia. The presidency is assumed by Slovenia.
During its mandate, Angola shared its experience in energy transition, with the 14th Assembly, held from 16 to 18 April 2024, recommending to other member states the adoption of the country's experience in matters of energy transition.
The delegation included the Angolan ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Júlio Maiato, as permanent representative to the organization, technicians from the Ministry of Energy and Water (MINEA) and embassy staff.
