Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector has been invited to enter grant negotiations of up to EUR 15,2 million from the European Union Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding program to support the next development phase of the BHC project. The BHC project is a project by Gasgrid Finland*, Swedish Nordion Energi H2 and Danish Copenhagen Energy Islands to develop and build an offshore hydrogen pipeline between Finland, Germany and Sweden.

The BHC consortium applied for financial support in autumn 2024 from EU’s CEF programme (Connecting Europe Facility). The list of projects invited to enter into grant agreement negotiations has been announced on 30 January 2025 based on a proposal from the European Commission.

“This is great news for the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC) project. The support demonstrates that the project is ready to move forward to the planning phase, where the commercial and technical concept will be developed, and the permitting process will be prepared. The BHC project is a significant step towards the EU’s energy self-sufficiency targets and the clean transition, we are grateful for the support by the European Commission”, says Erkka Saario, VP of Large Infrastructure Projects at Gasgrid.

This CEF call attracted over 74 applications for total EUR 4 billion requested with a total funding of EUR 1,25 billion invited to grant negotiations.

With help of the CEF grant the BHC project is preparing to enter the Pre-FEED phase where the focus will be on maturing the commercial and technical concept and to start the permitting process with related surveys. Key activities during this phase will include technical feasibility studies, customer engagement, permitting preparation and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) activities.
