Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC; formerly JNOC-Japan National Oil Corporation) have commenced a CO2-EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) study in Lower Zakum oil field offshore Abu Dhabi. The joint study will seek for commercialization of CO2-EOR in an optimum manner. JOGMEC-TRC (Technology Research Center) will collaborate with INPEX Corporation and Japan Oil Development CO LTD.

ADNOC and JOGMEC have commenced a CO2-EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) study in Lower Zakum oil field offshore Abu Dhabi. The joint study will seek for commercialization of CO2-EOR in an optimum manner. JOGMEC-TRC (Technology Research Center) will collaborate with INPEX Corporation and Japan Oil Development CO LTD.

The new study will design a CO2-EOR pilot test to acquire data in order to reduce uncertainties that may cause problems during implementation. It is composed of laboratory studies, subsurface reservoir simulations and conceptual design work for CO2 injection, which will serve as guidelines of CO2-EOR pilot tests prior to implementing large-scale CO2 injection.

JOGMEC has been involved in IOR/EOR studies since the mid 1970’s, focusing on CO2- EOR especially in Abu Dhabi and also in Kuwait, Mexico, Turkey, and Vietnam.

JOGMEC and ADNOC have collaborated on the research of low-permeable carbonate reservoirs in offshore Abu Dhabi since 2000 with a pioneering approach utilizing industrial exhaust gases for CO2-EOR. This comprehensive study on CO2-EOR has paved the way for the current study which aims to increase recoverable reserves, to enlarge the development areas, and at the same time to reduce at least a few million tons per year of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as they are captured and injected into the oil reservoirs.

Long continued collaborative relationship between ADNOC and JOGMEC is expected to bloom even more vigorously in the CO2-EOR in Lower Zakum oil field offshore Abu Dhabi and also to contribute to mitigating the global greenhouse effect.
