Source: 4/3/2010, Location: Middle East

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Oman Gas Company (OGC) have jointly launched a Pipeline Awareness Campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of the Sultanate’s oil and gas pipelines and ensuring that they are protected. Directed at the general public, the campaign will include meetings with local communities and visits by pipeline specialists to schools. The campaign is being carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Oil and Gas. “Oil and Natural Gas are transported through a series of high-pressure oil and gas pipelines,”

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Hamed bin Saif Al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas said. “These pipelines are extremely important to the economic development of the nation. They are, however, potentially dangerous and must be protected.”

PDO and OGC operate an extensive network of pipelines, the main ones being PDO’s Main Oil Line linking fields in the interior with the export terminal at Mina al Fahal and OGC’s gas pipelines connecting gas fields in the centre of Oman with Salalah, Muscat, Sohar and across the border with the United Arab Emirates through the “Dolphin” project.

The awareness campaign aims to highlight the potential dangers of oil and gas pipelines and the need to respect the Restricted Areas around the pipelines. All pipelines are covered by a Right Of Way, a strip of land extending 25 metres on each side of the pipeline. The Right of Way serve to provide a physical buffer to protect both the pipeline and the general public; to secure access for maintenance; and to enable the public to identify the route of the pipeline. John Malcom, Managing Director of PDO said: “Our pipelines are a critical infrastructure that passes through many communities. People need to be aware of their function and to help protect them.”

Yousuf Al Ojaili, Chief Executive Officer of OGC said: “Our network of Gas pipelines and Supply Stations contain highly flammable natural gas. We need to educate the public of the need to observe the Right of Way of these important assets in order to protect the safety of people and assets and to ensure non interruptible supply of gas to the different sectors. ”
