EAX Begins 2D Seismic in Kenya Offshore Blocks

Source: Reuters 4/12/2010, Location: Africa

Dubai-based East African Exploration (EAX) has begun a two-dimensional seismic survey in Kenya's offshore L17/18 blocks as exploration hots up in east Africa's largest economy, a government geologist said.

The two blocks are in the same basin as Block L4, on Pate Island, which showed significant traces of gas after an earlier exploration round.

"East African Exploration started the two-dimensional seismic survey in their Block L17/L18 on Friday, April 9, 2010," said John Omenge, chief geologist at the Ministry of Energy.

"The survey will cover the transitional zone; that is the coastline, creeks and near offshore areas licensed in their PSC (production sharing contract) along the stretch from Shimoni in the south to Mtwapa in the north."

The two blocks were leased to EAX under a joint production-sharing contract.

Omenge said government officials from the energy, fisheries, maritime and environmental departments were monitoring the work. EAX would use the data obtained to determine the location for drilling a well in 2011, Omenge said.

"All our blocks at the coast have good potential for gas because the extension of the Lamu Basin goes into Tanzania ... and further to Mozambique," Omenge said.

The Lamu Basin is an extension of the Tanzanian basin that is already producing natural gas and the Mozambique area where Anadarko Petroleum has discovered some natural gas in the Rovuma Basin.

Oil exploration interest in Kenyan blocks has increased in the last 15 months. At least 11 blocks have been licensed since September 2008, out of a total 24 blocks leased out for exploration.

Lion Petroleum, Vanoil, Africa Oil, Flow Energy and Anadarko are also expected to start 2D seismic studies soon.

China's CNOOC spudded a well in October 2009 and is expected to stop drilling once it hits a target depth of 5,556 metres this month.
