Aramco Plans Petro Rabigh Refinery Shutdown in April

Rabigh Refining and Petrochemicals Co., a joint venture between Sumitomo Chemical Co. and Saudi Aramco, plans to shut its plant in April for 30 days of maintenance, the unitís chief executive officer said.

Petro Rabigh, as the venture is known, will conduct a full turnaround and inspection starting from the third week of April, Ziad Al-Labban said at a conference in Dubai today. The work will examine the plantís units after their first two years of operation.

The facility on Saudi Arabiaís Red Sea coast produces 2.8 million tons of gasoline and 1.3 million tons of ethylene a year, as well as gasoil, fuel oil and other refined products.

Aramco and Sumitomo are set to spend between $6 billion to $8 billion on an expansion at Petro Rabigh to add petrochemicals production capacity, Aramco Chief Executive Officer Khalid Al- Falih told reporters at the conference today. The partners, each of which holds 37.5 percent of the company, are performing engineering and design studies and plan to start awarding work contracts next year.
