China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has completed construction of the third Shaanxi-Beijing gas pipeline and will put it into operation on Jan. 4, Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

The 896-kilometre pipeline, with a capacity of 15 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year, will boost gas supply security for Beijing and neighbouring regions.

The existing two Shaanxi-Beijing pipelines have a total capacity of 20 bcm per year.

Construction of the pipeline started on May 26, 2009, the report said.

However, the National Development and Reform Commission only approved the project this month.
