Mohammad Hussein, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Kuwait Oil Company, said here Tuesday that Kuwait's natural gas output could hit 4 billion cubic metres by 2030, according to jurassic surveys and studies.

Hussein said at the opening ceremony of the second day of Kuwait's First Conference for Oil and Gas that the natural gas industry is totally different from the oil industry, and so it requires educational outputs and new technical cadres to fulfil the goals set within Kuwait's long-term plan for exploring and producing suitable quantities of natural gas.

He added that such quantities of natural gas should meet the increasing local needs along with reducing the quantities of oil used in generating electricity in the present time. Hussein made clear that there is an increasing need for natural gas due to the increase of population within the state integrated vision for relying on the natural gas to generate electricity and gradually reduce imports.

Further, he pointed out that KPC future vision aims at extracting reasonable quantities of natural gas through prospecting plans, along with achieving new high rates of no less than 75 percent of prospecting plans that are carried out in various areas of Kuwait as part of KPC future plan.

He also stressed that all quantities of natural gas to be extracted will be devoted to local consumption in view of the increasing needs of population, noting that there are ongoing talks with the Ministry of Planning, and the Ministry of Water and Electricity in order to set the optimal mechanism for using quantities of natural gas that are due to be extracted in the coming years.

Hussein said that there are expectations that Kuwait will need extra 7 megawatts of electricity in the coming years in order to meet future shortage in electricity, adding that this will happen through reducing reliance on oil in power plants and replacing it with natural gas.

Hussein also made clear that Kuwait output of natural gas amounts to 1.2 billion cubic metres, and it will rise to 4 billion cubic metres by 2030 in what means extracting big quantities of natural gas in the future, noting that there is about 800 million cubic metres extracted from Wafra zone, besides less quantities from the Saudi-Kuwaiti Neutral Zone of Khafji.
