The second phase of lying Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline has started, Petroleum Secretary Ejaz Chaudhry said. He went on to say that, 17 short listed companies have been issued tender papers, SHANA news agency reported. Chaudhry said no company has yet been given the contract to lay the pipeline.

He stated that interested companies will first arrange financing after fulfilling requirements and then they will be awarded the contract in a transparent manner.

He said Pakistan wants to complete the project by 2014 according to its set target. A German firm, he said, was given the contract last year for consultancy only.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan will take decision on Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline keeping in view its own interests and would not succumb to any pressure in this regard.

Gilani said Pakistan would build ties with other countries including Iran keeping in view its own interests. Pakistan will construct a 700km-long pipeline from its border while Iran would build a 300km long stretch of the pipeline from Iranshahr to the Pakistani border.
