The test transfer of gas from Iran to Nakhichevan has just started, said managing director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Rokneddin Javadi, adding that the main project will start in the next two weeks. “This includes a swap of gas from Azerbaijan to Iran,” the Iranian official implied, saying that Iran will then transfer the gas to Nakhichevan.

He also pointed to the new developments in talks over gas export to Europe via east Turkey, noting that if a trilateral agreement is reached, Iran will have a part in the project, which includes transfer of 27-32 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe (first stop to be at Austria).

“The Europeans know that Iran is the only country in Central Asia that can provide such a huge volume of gas,” the official stated. Earlier this week, deputy oil minister for international affairs Nejad-Hosseinian had noted that Iran would set up five-party talks over the issue, with Iran and Ukraine being the main parties, as soon as the new Iranian oil minister is appointed.
