DUBAI, December 10, 2003 -- Saudi Aramco garnered the Brand of the Decade Award in the Petrochemicals, Industrial and Manufacturing category during a recent ceremony in Dubai.

The awards were the first of their kind, signifying the Gulf business sector's maturity.

More than 300 Arab business leaders attended the event Sunday night at Mina A, which was hosted by Gulf Marketing Review magazine in celebration of its 10th anniversary.

Two independent companies put each nominated brand through Gulf-wide market research. Ipsos-Stats and AME Info canvassed more than 1,000 marketers before a panel of expert judges reviewed the quality of brand communications to select a winner and a "highly commended" in each of the 10 categories.

Including Saudi Aramco's award, Saudi brands won in five of the 10 categories presented, including Saudi American Bank, Saudi Net, Safola and Cooline. The fact that five of the 10 winning brands were Saudi is a manifestation of the significance of the Saudi private sector and the growth of its capabilities.

Competition was strong in the petrochemicals, industrial and manufacturing category. Several major industrial companies competed, representing the key businesses that Gulf companies rely on for their main sources of income. "I believe this award recognizes not only our company's reputation in the region, but also the reality of our operational capabilities, our strategic position in the petroleum industry and the daily efforts of the 56,000 men and women of Saudi Aramco," said Nasser A. Al-Nafisee, manager of the Public Relations Department.

The independent judging panel included Lance de Masi, president of the American University of Dubai; Dr. Mohsen Abounaga, dean of the College of Design and Applied Arts at Dubai University College; Khamis Al-Muqla, chairman and managing director of Gulf Saatchi and Saatchi; Talal Dhulaymi, group chairman of Promoaction DDB; Salah Al-Jasser, director of Lexus (KSA); Abdul Kader Bibi, regional director of Al-Khaleejiah in Dubai; and Ali Mohammed Kamal, marketing director of Al-Jazeera Channel.
