Alstom has signed with Dongbu Corporation a contract to deliver equipment for Dongbu Green Power Plant 1&2 (1200 MW), the first ultrasupercritical coal-fired power plant to be constructed by an Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Korea. This contract[1], valued at over €100 million, covers the delivery of two 600MW steam turbines, generator sets and accessories. It will be completed by 2016. The turbines and generators will be manufactured in Alstom’s production sites in Europe and China.

Dongbu Green Power Plant will contribute to Korea’s growing energy demands that are projected to grow at 2.3% per year through 2030. Korea’s current capacity is estimated at 90GW, with the total capacity expected to reach approximately 110GW by 2020. Ultrasupercritical power plants operate at a higher temperature than regular coal-fired power plants. The high temperature improves their efficiency, increasing the amount of power output and decreasing emissions, particularly CO2 per unit of fuel burned.

Andreas Lusch, Senior Vice President Steam of Alstom Thermal Power said, “This success reinforces our customer’s confidence in our ultrasupercritical technology to produce cheaper, cleaner power for Korean consumers and businesses, thus significantly contributing to Korea’s efforts to meet its energy demands.”
