3rd Sulfur Train Completed at Riyadh

Sulfur Recovery Unit Train 3, completed by the Central Region Projects Division of the Central and Western Regions Projects Department under a separate project from Trains 1 and 2, was commissioned at Riyadh Refinery in November.

The Train 3 project, coming after and duplicating Trains 1 and 2, benefited from synergies in design, engineering, materials specifications, spare-parts inventory and operator training. That dramatically cut work-hours, time and cost.

The one thing that wasn't cut was safety. While the lump-sum, turnkey (LSTK) contractor was allowed to duplicate the earlier trains, safety standards were kept up-to-the-minute.

As a result, six months was saved in the engineering and procurement phase, and the first materials arrived on site nine months after the LSTK contract was awarded.

Train 3 took 26 months to complete, eight months ahead of schedule when compared to the industry average of 34 months for the same size LSTK contract.

When compared to previous Saudi Aramco sulfur-recovery projects, which all averaged 33 months of detailed design and construction, Train 3 finished seven months ahead.
