Chiyoda Corp has been awarded a licensing and engineering contract by Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd for the use of Chiyoda’s Acetica technology for producing acetic acid. This technology will be sub-licensed by Foster Wheeler to Petr?leo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras; Rio de Janerio, Brazil) for Complexo Gas-Quimico UFN-IV - a world-scale, grassroots gas-to-chemicals complex in Linhares, Espirito Santo State, southeast Brazil.
The complex is planned to produce ammonia and urea, methanol, acetic acid, formic acid and melamine. Foster Wheeler is the Integrator for the project.
Chiyoda will provide the process design package, technical assistance and training services during the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase until successful completion of the process performance test. Basic engineering design and front-end engineering design for the acetic acid plant are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013. The acetic acid plant will have a capacity of approximately 200,000 ton/yr.
Chiyoda’s Acetica process is one of the methanol-carbonylation routes that us methanol and carbon monoxide as feedstock, and used a heterogeneous catalyst for the efficient production of acetic acid, says Chiyoda. The process advantages are said to be: easy to handle catalyst; limited loss of rhodium; efficient reactor; low content of by-products; relatively low corrosivity; and less utility consumption by use of a loop-type bubbling reactor system.
