CITGO Petroleum Corporation refineries were recognized by the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) with seven awards for their safe operations during 2007. The awards were presented at the Safety Awards Banquet held here as part of NPRA’s National Safety Conference.

The awards included one Gold Award, three Meritorious Safety Awards and three Achievement Awards.

“As recipients of these seven awards, we are very proud of the efforts put forward by our employees to carry out safe and environmentally responsible operations every day. At the same time, this is a humbling reminder that to continue to succeed, we must strive to perform safely each day,” said CITGO Chairman, President and CEO Alejandro Granado.

Of the seven awards, CITGO’s Corpus Christi refinery received two Safety Achievement Awards, one Gold Award and one Merit Award; the CITGO Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex received one Safety Achievement Award and one Merit Award and the CITGO Lemont Refinery received one Merit Award.

The NPRA Award of Merit recognizes facilities with a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 1.0 or less with no workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the calendar year. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery achieved a rate of 0.00 TRIR; the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex achieved a rate of 0.30 TRIR; and the Lemont Refinery achieved a rate of 0.50 TRIR.

The NPRA Gold Award recognizes facilities with a 25 percent or greater reduction in the TRIR with no workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the calendar year, as compared to the average TRIR for the three previous calendar years. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery achieved each a reduction of 100 percent.

The NPRA Safety Achievement Award (1 million-plus employee hours) acknowledges facilities for operating one million or more employee hours without an employee lost workday case involving days away from work and without a workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the evaluation period. CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery achieved 4.7 million hours and the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex achieved 1.8 million hours.

The NPRA Safety Achievement Award (one-plus years) acknowledges facilities for operating one or more years without an employee lost workday case involving days away from work and without a workplace-related fatality of an employee or non-employee during the evaluation period. The Corpus Christi Refinery achieved three years.
