During the XV Brazilian Congress on Energy (CBE), held in Rio de Janeiro, the Director for Gas and Energy at Petrobras, Alcides Santoro, invited the industry to take part in the 12th Bid Round of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), scheduled for November this year, and defended auctioning off regional energy.

- This is the first Bid Round exclusively focusing on on-shore exploration and production. It’s very important that all the players take part because the only way to lower the price of natural gas is by increasing domestic production – Santoro explained during the event held at the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), commemorating 50 years of Coppe/UFRJ.

Remembering that Brazil is a net importer of natural gas since approximately 50% of the domestic supply comes from Bolivia or other foreign sources as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), The Petrobras Director said "a reduction in price is only possible if domestic gas supply is plentiful".

Santoro also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of holding regional energy auctions, taking advantage of the comparative advantages of each region in Brazil.

- In the Northeast, we have the wind facility, in the South, apart from the wind, there is coal, in the Southeast and Midwest, we have biomass, and we also have a network of gas pipelines that covers a lot Brazil. No source should be excluded. They all have their place in the domestic energy matrix - said the Director.

Considering that "there is no economic development without energy safety", Santoro emphasized the importance of robust electricity generation and highlighted Petrobras’ efforts in this, noting that today the Company is the seventh largest generator in Brazil with 6,885 MW in its thermoelectric park.

Also with investments in wind power and small hydroelectric plants, Petrobras opened its first solar power plant this year in Rio Grande do Norte and its third LNG Regasification Terminal in Bahia, which will increase the Company’s regasification capacity to 41 million m3/day.
