Flottweg Adjustable Speed Centrifuge Reduced Waste

Operator’s Challenge – In the course of drilling a 24-in. section to 3,034.78 ft (925 m), in cretaceous and upper visean formations, an operator was experiencing a large volume of water-based mud (WBM) drilling waste. Downhole losses had been expected in this section due to the large wellbore diameter and high dilution rates dictated by highly dispersive young clays.

Additionally, downhole losses in fractured limestone of Cretace Superieur, and vast sandstone layers of Continental Intercalaire were also anticipated. Because of these conditions, maintaining minimum active fluid density until the section was drilled to TD, using the ‘dump/dilute’ method, would lead to unreasonably large section volumes. Also, previous interval completion efforts in this area necessitated the use of an additional vacuum truck to move out excess of WBM waste from the rig.

Halliburton’s Solution
In order to provide a cost effective solution to this customer, the Baroid team analyzed the offset wells’ data and proposed installing the same type of Baroid Flottweg Adjustable Speed Centrifuge that was used to successfully complete previous sections.
