Algeria Asserts Right to Gas Plant Attack Inquiry

Source: Algeria Times 1/11/2014, Location: Africa

Algeria's justice minister says his country has the sole right to investigate last year's attack on a desert gas tank by an al-Qaida linked group that left 40 hostages dead.

Tayeb Louh's announcement Thursday came days after France opened its own investigation into the Jan. 2013 attack on the facility, which left one French person dead.

The plant is jointly run by Norway's Statoil, Algeria's Sonatrach and energy giant BP.

Louh said a special judge was conducting Algeria's investigation, but little information has emerged about the probe.

Three of the 32 assailants are reported to be in custody. The group stormed the facility and took foreigners hostage until the Algerian military retook the plant three days later.
