Amec Foster Wheeler announces has been awarded a contract by Nugeneration Ltd (NuGen) for environmental services on the proposed new nuclear power station at Moorside, Cumbria – which will be the largest nuclear new build project currently proposed in the UK.
The multi-million pound contract, the value of which has not been announced, is one of the first publicly announced by NuGen, and will see Amec Foster Wheeler carry out environmental impact assessments on the site, which is near to the Sellafield complex in West Cumbria.
Amec Foster Wheeler will also provide specialised environmental consultancy support to prepare for the installation of the plant’s three Westinghouse reactors, which will generate 3.4GW of electricity - seven per cent of the UK’s electricity requirements - when they are operational in 2026.
“This is a key contract and further highlights Amec Foster Wheeler’s important role in the development of the UK’s nuclear new build programme,” said Rob Brown, Managing Director of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Environment and Infrastructure business in Europe.
“It follows similar recent work at other proposed nuclear new build stations at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. It has the potential for us to develop a long-term partnership with NuGen and to work with them throughout this truly exciting development which will provide the UK with reliable, safe, low-carbon energy for generations to come.”
The contract, which will start immediately, means that Amec Foster Wheeler is bringing its skills and expertise across the entire nuclear new build programme in the UK and reflects the experience and know-how within the company which stretches back more than 50 years in the international nuclear sector.
