Citgo Petroleum Corp. had a fire in a crude unit atmospheric tower at its Corpus Christi, Texas, refinery, two people with knowledge of the situation said.
The fire at the East plant broke out on scaffolding around the crude unit. There were no injuries, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public. The unit was shut at the time for planned maintenance.
The 35 days of work, which began Feb. 5, includes the crude unit at the East plant and a coker, sulfur recovery unit and mixed distillate hydrotreater at the West plant. A message on a community hotline on Feb. 3 said that the refinery planned to shut units for planned maintenance until March 10.
Fernando Garay, a Houston-based spokesman for Citgo, said in an e-mail that the company is working on a statement.
The company’s Corpus Christi East and West plants have a combined capacity of 157,000 barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
