President Hassan Rouhani said Iran and Oman will reach new agreements about oil and gas cooperation during his stay in the Persian Gulf state.

“During this trip, the [previously reached] agreements will be followed up on and new decisions will be adopted regarding diverse commercial and economic cooperation particularly in the oil and gas sectors…monetary and banking cooperation,” Rouhani said before leaving Tehran.

The Iranian president is reciprocating last year’s visit to Tehran of Oman’s king.

Rouhani said he will take into account cooperation on important regional and international issues due to the sensitivity of the Persian Gulf and Middle East regions.

Petroleum Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh is accompanying President Rouhani in this visit.

Iran and Oman share the Hangam oil field located 45 kilometers from the Qeshm Island. The field was discovered in 1975.

Hangam is estimated to hold more than 700 million barrels of oil and some two trillion cubic feet of gas in place.

Last year, Iran signed a 60-billion-dollar agreement for gas exports to Oman during 25 years.

In the meantime, Iran and India agreed to start constructing a deepwater pipeline crossing Oman for gas delivery from Iran to India.

Oman is an OPEC member in the Persian Gulf. Thirty percent of Oman’s total crude oil production is provided by international oil companies.
