Spain wants to strengthen its cooperation with Algeria in the field of energy particularly in natural gas, said in Algiers Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister José Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil.

“There is an issue that I would like to deepen on the occasion of my visit. It is that of energy. The crisis between Russia and Ukraine unveiled Europe’s over dependency on Russia’s gas,” he told the press upon his arrival in Houari Boumediene International Airport as part of a two-day official visit to Algeria.

“It is time to see what we can do in terms of gas with our friends of the Maghreb and particularly with our Algerian friends, knowing that Algeria supplies Spain with 45% of its consumed natural gas,” said the Spanish official.

“From an economic point of view, Spain is Algeria’s first partner,” he said.

Regarding the objectives of his visit to Algeria, José Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil said that it is part of the strengthening of the cooperation between the two countries through an “ongoing” and “sustained” dialogue.

The visit will allow, he said, the two sides to strengthen the Algerian-Spanish dialogue in the political, economic and energy fields, as well as to exchange views on international political issues.

The visit is also, he added, an opportunity to have an update on the international meetings.

“There are very important issues that we wish to examine with our Algerian partners. We have just had a meeting in Valencia. We will hold a meeting in Oran by the end of summer. There will be also a 5+5 meeting in Portugal. It is important to know the perceptions of our Algerian friends,” he said.
