During the last 5 years, PEMEX has achieved a reduction of 15 million tons in emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which represents 50 percent of the target for the company in the Special Climate Change Program the Federal Government.
This was stated by Emilio Lozoya Austin, Director General of Pemex, during the presentation of the Sustainability Report 2013, an exercise in transparency and accountability that the company makes 14 years.
He stressed that waste generation has dropped more than 50 thousand tons less than 32,000, a reduction of almost 40 percent, while water consumption has remained stable despite the increase of industrial operations Pemex.
After ensuring that sustainability is one of the major challenges, Lozoya Austin said that Pemex, the concept is anchored in the constitutional mandate to create value in a context of social and environmental responsibility. The report is prepared based on international methodologies such as Sustainable Asset Management (SAM), which gave Pemex a score above the international average for the sector, the Global Reporting Initiative, in which again the highest possible rating (A was +) and the Carbon Disclosure Project, which evaluates performance in terms of carbon footprint.
Meanwhile, the corporate director of operations, Carlos Murrieta Cummings said that sustainability is not incompatible with the performance as both the oil industry should be complementary. Competitiveness and market leadership, he said, can only be maintained if the operation is socially and environmentally sustainable.
During his speech, the Deputy Director of New Business Models of Pemex Exploration and Production, Guaso Sergio Montoya, said the social license to operate is obtained and stored from a true commitment to a clean and safe operation that provides lasting benefits for communities. Pemex has a long history in building mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders with which it interacts, he stressed.
