Yemen's oil minister Khalid Mahfoudh Bahah said Thursday the country plans to increase oil output to 500,000 barrels a day in a phased process over the next three years. Yemen currently produces 380,000 b/d of crude oil.

"The companies (mostly private) themselves will put in money (to increase production)," said Bahah. The enhanced production is expected to come from oil blocks which were offered for exploration under three rounds of bidding, said Bahah.

Yemen also plans to offer 5-10 new blocks for exploration under a fourth round of bidding expected in the second half of this year.

Meanwhile, the Middle East nation plans to start producing liquefied natural gas at the end of 2008, said Bahah.

The first phase of an LNG project being built by Yemen LNG Company, majority owned by French oil and gas company Total S.A. (TOT), will be ready for production at the end of 2008 and the second phase by mid 2009, Bahah said.

The project, when completed, will have the capacity to produce 6.7 million tons of LNG annually.
