The Zambian government is set to conclude the selection of companies to explore for oil in its northwestern province by the end of the first quarter, the deputy minister of mines and minerals development said in a statement Wednesday.

Maxwell Mwale said the bidding process was progressing well, and the country would select companies and allocate them with exploration blocks.

Last year, the ministry said it had discovered oil in the northwestern province after extensive prospecting in the region. It said samples were tested in German laboratories that indicated deposits of oil and gas.
