CGG GeoSoftware has donated its Hampson-Russell and Jason geophysical software suites, covering all aspects of reservoir characterization, to Stanford University, California. The donated software suites, worth over $3 million, will enable students to better explore reservoir characterization and conduct further research on seismic inversion.

CGG has been a member of the Stanford Industrial Affiliates Program called the Stanford Rock Physics and Borehole Geophysics (SRB) Project since 2008. CGG is also a recent member of the Stanford Center for Reservoir Forecasting (SCRF).

Kamal al-Yahya, Senior Vice President, CGG GeoSoftware said, “CGG and Stanford University share the same commitment to technical excellence and innovation. The technical innovations we see year after year from the SRB team are very beneficial to CGG and the rest of the industry. Our recent software donations continue to cement relations between CGG and Stanford’s Energy Resources Engineering and Geophysics department to help improve the postgraduate training in Rock Physics and Reservoir Forecasting. Through our University Donation Program, CGG GeoSoftware is committed to fostering technological education and empowering a new generation of geoscientists."

Tapan Mukerji, Associate Research Professor of Energy Resources Engineering and Geophysics department, Stanford University, said, “Graduate students at the Stanford Rock Physics group and the Stanford Center for Reservoir Forecasting are using the software in their research for impedance inversion and reservoir characterization. A great benefit of such a donation is that the students can focus on their research rather than on the algorithms since these have already been well-tested by developers of the software. The researchers are very grateful for this opportunity provided by CGG. The students apply many different modules, applying both deterministic and stochastic approaches in their research, developing valuable skills that are important for their future careers."

CGG GeoSoftware is a full-service provider of advanced geoscience software including the globally respected Hampson-Russell, Jason, and Insight Earth® brands within CGG’s Geology, Geophysics & Reservoir division. They provide a comprehensive set of tools and support for multi-disciplinary teamwork including seismic reservoir characterization, petrophysics, rock physics modeling, structural and seismic interpretation, velocity modeling, time-to-depth conversion, and reservoir modeling.
