Bestobell Valves is celebrating supplying cryogenic valves to Canada’s first LNG-fuelled ferry – the MV Armand-Imbeau II, which has recently been launched. t is the first of two dual fuel ferries being built for ferry operator Société des Traversiers du Québec. The ferry features the innovative new LNGPac fuel storage system which operates on dual fuel, allowing it to become one of the most environmentally friendly vessels currently operating.
The 436 metre vessel is only the second in North America to operate on LNG, following Harvey Gulf International Marine’s Harvey Energy offshore supply vessel, which also had cryogenic valves supplied by Bestobell.
Duncan Gaskin, Sales Director at Bestobell Valves said: “It is really satisfying to see that the first two vessels in North America operating on LNG as a marine fuel have our cryogenic valves within their fuel systems. LNG is the fuel of the future for marine vessels, as shipowners aim to meet every more stringent environmental legislation.”

An important part of this is our partnership with fuel system manufacturers, as we have the expertise in the marine sector to be able to adapt to and design bespoke solutions. Over the next couple of years, there is a predicted rise in dual fuel conversions and more environmentally friendly vessels will be built, which presents a fantastic opportunity for our cryogenic valves.”
Running vessels on LNG propulsion is expected to significantly reduce or almost eliminate the sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide (SOx, NOx, and CO2) and particulate matter from ship emissions when compared to traditional diesel fuel.
