Alstom to Supply New Train Control System for Busiest Area in Canada

Source: 9/10/2015, Location: North America

Alstom was awarded by Metrolinx - an Ontario government public transit agency - a contract worth €113 million to provide a new computer-based integrated train control system for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, one of the busiest transit areas in Canada. The commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2018. This follows the contract awarded by Metrolinx to Alstom in November 20141 to equip the Union Station Rail Corridor (USRC) with a new signalling system.

Alstom will provide its Iconis control centre solution to integrate the customer’s rail network into a single control centre featuring advanced traffic control and operations management functionality. The system will provide Metrolinx with a comprehensive view of the entire network (routes totalling 452 kilometres with 253 weekday train trips), support to optimize each train movement and manage preventive maintenance work.

“We are pleased that Metrolinx has entrusted Alstom with this new contract to supply an integrated control centre for its regional train service. This is a continuing partnership with Metrolinx that will bring secure and efficient operations to the network,” said Angelo Guercioni, Vice-President and Customer Director, Canada, Alstom Transport.

This project will be carried out by Alstom’s project office in Toronto. Alstom has been present in the country for more than 70 years, with over 20 offices and more than 1,300 employees to serve its local customers. In addition to its headquarters in Montreal and an office in Toronto, Alstom Transport also has a project site in Ottawa and a manufacturing facility in Sorel-Tracy.

Other recent projects in the country include supplying the city of Ottawa with Citadis Spirit light rail vehicles (along with 30-year maintenance services) and regional Coradia Lint trains, as well as metro cars2 and an Iconis integrated control centre for the Société de transport de Montréal.
