M&B Group has been granted approval by the Zambian Government to proceed with bankable feasibility studies for the proposed Bwana Mkubwa Oil Refinery and Pipeline. The project is being developed as a Joint Venture Partnership between M&B Group and local company Phoenix Material & Constructing Company, in cooperation with Samsung engineering of South Korea. The project will involve development of the new Bwana Mkubwa Oil Refinery, an 1800km pipeline responsible for supplying crude oil to the refinery and supporting infrastructure.

The proposed Bwana Mkubwa Oil Refinery will be built adjacent to the Indeni Oil Refinery in Ndola, Zambia. If successful, the project will increase Zambia’s energy output three fold. Indeni is Zambia’s one and only basic topping refinery which was built over 40 years ago and is currently struggling with capacity. Zambia’s increasing energy demands in the mining and resource sector has put enormous pressure on the struggling Indeni refinery, requiring expensive energy imports to meet the shortfalls. The proposed Bwana Mkubwa Oil Refinery will play a vital role in developing Zambia’s economy. M&B Group’s feasibility study will cover the technical and economic aspects of the project and include the Environmental Impact Assessment. The study will also examine the socioeconomic impact this project will have on the local population in the affected areas.

M&B Group Executive Director Mr Charles Kamwi will visit Zambia in August to further progress the Bwana Mkubwa Project. The project target completion date is 2017. Further meetings are expected to be held in South Korea later this year to further advance the project to bankability.

M&B Group and its strategic partners visit the site of the current Indeni Oil Refinery adjacent to the site of the new Bwana Mkubwa Oil Refinery, accompanied by then Minister of Commerce, Trade & Industry Hon Robert Sichinga.
