Algeria Jan-April Grain Imports Down 9.5 Pct

Source: Reuters 6/7/2016, Location: Africa

Algeria's grain imports totalled 4.39 million tonnes in the first four months of 2016, down 9.5 percent from the same period a year earlier, despite higher soft wheat purchases, official data showed.

Algeria, one of the world's largest grain importers, has said it will try to reduce its import bill in an attempt to offset a fall in world crude oil prices, which has cut state revenues.

Soft wheat imports rose to 2.17 million tonnes from 2.12 million tonnes, while durum wheat purchases were down at 665,386 tonnes from 681,159, according to customs figures.

Barley import volumes declined to 324,520 tonnes from 370,581 tonnes, while maize purchases fell to 1.23 million tonnes from 1.67 million tonnes in the January-April period of 2015.

The overall value of grain imports dropped 28 percent to $940.89 million due to lower prices.

Algeria harvested 4 million tonnes of grain in 2015, up 14.3 percent from the previous year.
