Construction of SSE’s 32 turbine Bhlaraidh wind farm near Invermoriston reached an important milestone this week as the first turbine components made their way to site.

Following a number of successful delivery trials, over the next five weeks the site will receive blades, turbine tower sections and components for the construction of its first seven turbines. The deliveries started on 3 October, via two different routes, one from Skye and one from Inverness.

This first batch of deliveries is expected to be completed, weather permitting, by the end of October. Deliveries are set to commence again in early spring 2017, when the remaining 25 turbines will make their way to site.

Between 3 October and 11 October, deliveries are travelling from the Broadford Aerodrome in Skye, having been transported there from Kyle of Lochalsh Harbour. This route encompasses the local road network, the A87 and A887 east from the Isle of Skye. The local road network affected includes Kyle Prospect Road where the harbours lower level car parking bays will be closed off for the duration of the deliveries. Alternative parking shall be made available at the Lochalsh Hotel and the Lochalsh Leisure Centre.

From 12 October, components will be delivered to site from the Inverness harbour. This route encompasses the local road network, the A82 south from Inverness and A887 west from Invermoriston. The Inverness local road network affected includes: Stadium Road; Telford Street; Clachnaharry Road; Scorguie Road; King Brude Road; and General Booth Road.

Details for these routes have been agreed with the Highland Council, Police Scotland and Transport Scotland. Corinna Scholes, SSE’s Community Liaison Manager, said: “The delivery of the first turbine components to site is a significant milestone for Bhlaraidh. The deliveries will be slow moving under police escort who will ensure that they take place safely and with as little disruption to other road users as possible. Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and vehicles will be able to pass the delivery vehicles safely at a number of points along the route as guided by the police. “We would like to thank the communities in advance for their patience during the deliveries.”
